However, today we show you how to relieve ear pain with a series of effective home remedies.

1. Warm Compresses

  • A warm compress on the ear gives off enough heat to increase circulation to the ear.
  • It will help us to decongest the ear, especially among children. The clean and hot compress can be placed in the ear for 5-10 minutes to calm the pain a bit at night.
  • If we don’t have a warm compress, we can use an ice pack. But we will always try to alternate temperatures.

2. Ginger

  • Ginger has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. These allow relieving individual pain, including those of the ear.
  • To do this, cut a 2-centimetre stick from the root of ginger.
  • We make small cuts on the stick’s side and insert it into the ear for about 10 minutes.

3. Garlic Oil

  • Garlic has analgesic properties that soothe earaches. In this case, we crush a clove of garlic and place it in a small container with two tablespoons of sesame oil.
  • Then we put the container in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. Finally, we strain the mixture and apply 2-3 drops in the ear that hurts.

4. Olive Oil

  • Another oil that calms earaches is olive oil. Placing a few drops of this type of fat in the ear is one of the most effective and popular home remedies.
  • However, we must first measure with a thermometer that the oil is not hotter than our body temperature.

5. Chamomile

  • The relaxing and decongestant effect of chamomile facilitates the discharge of secretions from the nose and ear.
  • We can, first, place a few drops of chamomile essential oil in a container of boiling water.
  • Then we cover our head with a towel and inhale the steam, which will help hydrate the canals that connect the nose to the ear.

6. Naturopathic Drops

  • Naturopathic drops are those that make with herbal extracts.
  • A recent study found that drops containing olive oil-based herbal extracts can be as significant or even better than traditional over-the-counter eardrops.

7. Hydrogen Peroxide

  • Hydrogen peroxide is another of the most basic remedies to relieve earache.
  • We have to place several drops of this liquid in the affected ear. After this, we let it rest inside the ear for a few minutes.
  • Finally, we rinse the ear with clean, distilled water to drain it.

8. Chewing Gum

  • When we chew gum, we are massaging the muscles around the ear and opening the Eustachian tubes.
  • These tubes are small tubes that connect the ear and the throat.
  • This message will help us to remove the secretions that accumulate in the ear, and that can be the cause of pain.

9. Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen to control pain associated with a painful type of ear infection called acute otitis media (AOM).
  • They’re safe to use with or without antibiotics, but be sure to follow dosing instructions on the label. These medications can also help lower a fever.
  • Talk to your doctor about the appropriate dose for children. Children and infant versions are available for many OTC pain relievers. It’s unsafe for children under age16 to take aspirin.

10. Chiropractic Treatment

  • If you go to the chiropractor for adjustments, you may find that your appointment can soothe your earache as much as your back pain.
  • Involving 46 child participants ages five and under found that 93 per cent of them showed improvement following chiropractic adjustments.
  • Of the children, 43 per cent of them felt better after only one or two sessions.
  • There have been no long-term clinical studies associating chiropractic treatment with reduced ear pain.

11. Sleep Positions

  • Some sleep positions will aggravate pain from ear infections, while some can help relieve it.
  • Sleep with the affected ear raised instead of having it faced down toward the pillow. It can allow the ear to drain better if necessary.
  • You can also sleep with your head elevated by using extra pillows. It can also help the ears drain faster.

12. Head Position and Neck Exercises

  • The earache is more intense at night. It is best to do it with the affected ear raised instead of pressing it against the pillow.
  • We can also sleep with our heads elevated using a series of extra pillows. Both remedies will help us drain the ear better.
  • Finally, specific neck rotation exercises will help us relieve pressure from the ear canal. To do this, we sit upright with both feet resting on the floor.
  • Next, and slowly, we rotate the neck and head to the right until it is parallel with the shoulder.
  • Then, we rotate the head to the other side until it is parallel with the left shoulder. The next step will be to lift the shoulders as high as if we were trying to cover the ears with them.
  • These exercises must perform slowly, repeating every morning when we get up.

13. Distraction

If it’s a child battling an earache, do your best to get them comfortable by taking their mind off the pain.

You may want to:

  • Put on their favourite movie.
  • Bring home a new colouring book.
  • Have a bubble bath with lots of toys
  • Let them play a game on your phone or tablet.
  • Pick up their favourite snack.
  • Find other things for them to focus on
  • If your child is of teething age, offer cooled teething toys for chewing.

This method also works for adults. Treat yourself to a good book or a favourite movie to take your mind off the earache.

When to Use a Home Remedy for Ear Pain

The best home remedy for an ear pain depends on the cause. If a cavity is to blame, your earache may not improve until you see a dentist.

However, if it’s an ear infection, using a natural remedy could make the illness bearable as your body fights off the infection.

Many ear infections clear up on their own in about a week or two, with symptoms starting to get better after a few days.

Be sure to check with your child’s paediatrician if your child has ear pain, especially under two years of age.

While there isn’t much evidence on alternative treatments for ear pain, many home remedies can soothe the pain.
